How to transcribe a podcast episode

1

Choose the episode

An audio file (MP3, M4A, WAV) or the video of a video podcast (MP4, MOV). For a long video, the audio alone is much smaller and quicker to read: Extract Audio makes one.

2

Pick the language

Leave it on Auto-detect, or choose the language the episode is in.

3

Transcribe

Accurate mode transcribes episodes up to 15 minutes in seconds. Longer episodes are transcribed free on your device, which is slower.

4

Fix names and terms

Click any line to correct guest names, brands or jargon.

5

Download

Text (.txt) for show notes or a blog post, or SRT or VTT for YouTube and video editors.

What podcasters use a transcript for

Show notes and blog posts: a transcript turns an episode into text that listeners can skim and search engines can read, which audio alone can't give you.

YouTube: uploading an SRT file with a video podcast gives captions with names spelled right, instead of YouTube's automatic ones.

Clips: cut a strong minute out of the episode with the Video Trimmer, then add animated captions to post it on Reels, Shorts or TikTok.

Accessibility: listeners who are deaf or hard of hearing can follow the whole conversation.

How podcast transcription works

Accurate mode (the default): your browser reads the audio out of the episode and sends only that audio to our server, where Whisper large-v3-turbo transcribes it (at Groq with data retention turned off, or the same model at DeepInfra, which doesn't store audio either). Nothing is kept. A video file never leaves your device.

Accurate mode takes episodes up to 15 minutes. Longer episodes are transcribed on your device with a smaller Whisper model: free and private, but slower and less accurate (on a 2020 laptop, roughly 4–5 times faster than the audio plays).

The transcript doesn't say who is speaking. In the text download it's split into paragraphs at pauses; the SRT and VTT files keep every line with its timing.

Frequently asked questions

How do I get a transcript of my podcast?

Choose the episode file on this page and let it transcribe, then pick Text and download. You get the words as paragraphs, ready to paste into show notes or a blog post. Pick SRT or VTT instead for timed subtitles.

How long an episode can I transcribe?

Accurate mode takes up to 15 minutes. Longer episodes are transcribed free on your device, which is slower. A very long video file can run out of memory on a phone; the episode's audio file works better.

Does it label who is speaking?

No. The transcript doesn't name the speakers. The text download starts a new paragraph at each pause, which often falls where the speaker changes, so adding names by hand is quick.

How do I add the subtitles to my YouTube video podcast?

Download the SRT file. In YouTube Studio, open the video, go to Subtitles, add the language, then upload the file and choose "With timing".

How accurate is it for podcasts?

Clear audio with one person speaking at a time comes out very well. People talking over each other, music under the speech and strong accents cause more mistakes, so read it through before publishing. Accurate mode is clearly better than the on-device model.

Is my episode uploaded?

In Accurate mode only the audio is sent, to be transcribed and then deleted; a video file never leaves your device. Choose On this device and nothing is uploaded at all.

Can I make captioned clips from an episode?

Yes. Cut the moment you want with the Video Trimmer, then choose Video with subtitles here, or use Captions for Reels & Shorts, to burn animated captions into the clip.
