AI Shorts Maker: Long Video to Shorts
Drop in a podcast, interview, talk or vlog. AI finds the moments that work on their own, writes a hook for each, and makes them vertical Shorts with animated captions, the picture following whoever is speaking. Free to try, no sign-up.
Your video stays on your device. How?
Only the sound is sent to be written out, then deleted. The AI (Claude, by Anthropic) reads the words to pick the moments, and sees a few small frames of a moment to place the vertical crop. Your Shorts are cut and made on your device.

How to turn a long video into Shorts
Choose your video
Pick a long video with someone talking: a podcast, an interview, a talk, a lesson or a vlog (MP4, MOV or WebM).
Let the AI listen
The sound is written out with the moment each word is said. Only the sound is sent, and it's deleted right after.
See the best moments
The AI reads everything that was said and picks the 3 to 5 moments that work on their own, each with its hook. Preview any of them.
Pick a caption style
Highlight, Box and One word are free; Hustle, Hype, Beast, Karaoke and Comic come with Pro.
Make your Shorts
Each Short is cut, turned vertical with the speaker in the frame, captioned and saved as an MP4, ready for YouTube Shorts, Reels and TikTok.
Why make Shorts from long videos
A one-hour podcast or a 20-minute YouTube video has a handful of moments people would share: a strong opinion, a surprising fact, a story with a payoff, a tip they can use today. Cut out and made vertical, each one can find new viewers on Shorts, Reels and TikTok, and send them back to the full video.
Doing it by hand means watching the whole video, finding those moments, cutting them on whole sentences, cropping a wide picture to 9:16 without cutting off the speaker, and adding captions word by word. AI Shorts Maker does all of it in a few minutes.
How the AI makes your Shorts
Your browser takes the sound out of the video and sends only that audio to be written out (Whisper), with the moment each word is said. Nothing is kept.
The words and their times, never the video, then go to Claude, an AI by Anthropic. It picks the moments a viewer would watch to the end: each one opens strong, makes sense without the rest of the video, ends right after its payoff, and starts and ends on whole sentences. It writes a short hook for each.
When you make a Short from a wide video, Claude looks at a few small frames of that moment to see where the person speaking is, so the vertical crop follows them instead of cutting them in half.
Your Short is then cut from the video, cropped, captioned word by word and saved as a vertical MP4 (1080×1920) on your own device.
Features
The moments that work
Bold claims, surprising facts, tips, stories with a payoff and funny moments, never an intro, a goodbye or a sponsor read, and never a sentence cut in half.
A hook for every Short
A few big words on screen in the first seconds, written from what's actually said, to stop the scroll.
The speaker stays in frame
From a wide video, the vertical window sits on whoever is speaking and moves when the shot changes.
Captions people read
Animated captions, word by word, timed to the speech, in styles made for Shorts and Reels.
Made for Shorts, Reels and TikTok
Vertical MP4 at 1080×1920 (720×1280 from a smaller video), up to 30 frames a second, most between 20 and 60 seconds long.
Private by design
Only the sound is sent to be written out, and the AI sees only the words and a few small frames. The video itself never leaves your device.
Frequently asked questions
Is the AI Shorts Maker free?
Yes. Free, the AI finds the best moments in the first 15 minutes of a video, once a day, and you can make one Short a day (with a small cliputils.com tag). ClipUtils Pro uses the whole video, up to 2 hours, makes every Short without the tag, and adds Pro caption styles.
Is this a free alternative to Opus Clip?
It does the same job: a long video in, its best moments out as vertical Shorts with captions and hooks. You don't need an account, and your video isn't uploaded: only its sound is sent to be written out.
How does the AI choose the moments?
It reads everything that was said, with the time of every word, and picks moments that open with something strong, make sense on their own, and end right after their payoff. It skips introductions, goodbyes and sponsor reads, and never cuts a sentence in half.
Will the speaker be cut off when the video is made vertical?
No. For each Short, the AI looks at a few small frames to see where the person speaking is, and the vertical window follows them. In an interview, it stays on whoever is talking.
Which videos work best?
Videos where someone talks: podcasts, interviews, talks, lessons, vlogs and live streams, from a few minutes to a couple of hours. Music videos and videos without speech don't have moments to pick from.
Which languages does it work in?
The words can be written out in 99 languages, and the AI picks moments and writes hooks in the language the video is spoken in, including Hindi, Spanish and Portuguese.
Is my video uploaded?
No. Only the sound is sent to be written out, then deleted. The AI sees the words and a few small frames of each moment you make. The Shorts are cut and made in your browser.
