How in-browser background removal works

This tool runs an image-segmentation neural network (ISNet) directly in your browser using WebAssembly. The model separates the main subject from the background and produces a transparency mask.

Because inference happens on your device, your photo is never uploaded. The trade-off is a one-time model download (about 32 MB) the first time you use the tool; after that it is cached, and each photo takes about 5–6 seconds on a 2020 laptop.

Automatic cutouts are excellent for clear subjects on distinct backgrounds. Very fine hair, transparent objects, or busy backgrounds can produce soft edges, the same limitation every automatic remover has.
