Why voices pick up noise, and what can be taken out

Phone and laptop microphones pick up everything in the room: the fan or AC, traffic outside, a keyboard, an echoing room. In a lecture recording, a voice note or a vlog it makes the voice tiring to listen to, and it hurts automatic subtitles too.

Steady noise (hum, hiss, fans, AC) comes out cleanly. Changing noise like traffic, clatter and chatter is reduced a lot by the Voice setting. Music behind a voice is treated as noise by Voice and Strong; for a song or a video with background music, use Light.

How it works

The file is processed by FFmpeg running in your browser. Voice uses RNNoise, a small neural network trained to keep speech and drop everything else; it listens in 10-millisecond slices, so it follows noise that comes and goes. Light uses a classic noise filter that learns the steady background and lowers it. Every strength first cuts deep rumble from wind, traffic and handling.

For a video, only the sound is changed: the picture is copied as it is, so it keeps its quality and the job stays quick. Nothing is uploaded at any point.

Will it remove music?

Does it make the voice sound robotic?
