How to compress a video

  1. Select a video. Drop or choose a common video file such as MP4 or WebM from your device.
  2. Choose compression level. Pick Smaller file, Balanced, or Higher quality. Output size depends on the source content.
  3. Optionally reduce resolution or remove audio. A lower max height often shrinks files more. Remove audio when you only need the picture.
  4. Click Compress Video. Encoding runs locally. You can cancel if it takes too long.
  5. Compare and download. Check original vs compressed size, preview the result, and download the MP4.

How video compression works

This tool re-encodes your video. Re-encoding can reduce file size by using a more efficient encoding setup, lowering visual quality a little, reducing resolution, or simplifying audio.

Results vary. A file that is already highly compressed may not get much smaller, and aggressive settings can look softer. The UI shows real before/after sizes after encoding—not guesses.

Choosing compression quality and resolution

Smaller file prioritizes size. Balanced is the default for everyday sharing. Higher quality keeps more detail at the cost of a larger file.

Reducing max resolution (for example from 4K to 720p) often has a larger impact on size than changing quality alone. Portrait clips keep their orientation.

Browser compression uses more memory than a desktop app. Long or high-resolution videos may need a lower resolution, a shorter clip, or a desktop browser.

Is my video uploaded to a server?

No. Your video is not uploaded to our servers for compression. Processing happens in your browser. Normal site assets (page and converter scripts) still load over the network.

Re-encoding usually changes visual quality. Stronger compression (Smaller file) reduces detail more. Higher quality preserves more detail. Always preview before sharing important footage.

Why is my compressed video sometimes larger?

If the source is already efficiently encoded, re-encoding can produce a similar or larger file. Try Smaller file or a lower max resolution. The tool reports when the output is larger than the original.

Does reducing resolution make videos smaller?

Yes, often substantially. Capping height to 720p or 480p usually reduces bitrate needs and file size compared with keeping a 1080p or 4K frame.

What video formats are supported?

Common formats such as MP4 and WebM usually work. Support depends on what the in-browser FFmpeg build can decode. If a file fails, try re-exporting as H.264 MP4.

Can I compress MP4 files?

Yes. MP4 is a primary input and the default output container. You can compress an MP4 and download a new compressed MP4.
