Why iPhone photos are HEIC, and when to convert

iPhones save photos as HEIC (High Efficiency Image Container) by default because it stores similar quality in a smaller file than JPG. The trade-off is that many apps, websites, and older devices cannot open HEIC.

Convert to JPG when you need broad compatibility for sharing, uploading, printing, or editing. JPG is smaller and works almost everywhere. Choose PNG when you want a lossless copy and file size is less important.
