The tool uses FFmpeg compiled to WebAssembly. It takes the first audio track from your file, ignores any video, and re-encodes it with the MP3 (LAME) or AAC encoder, or writes uncompressed PCM for WAV.
Converting between two compressed formats, such as AAC to MP3, is a lossy re-encode. At 192 kbps or above the difference is inaudible for almost everyone, but converting the same file back and forth repeatedly does degrade it, so keep the original.

MP3 plays on every device, M4A (AAC) is smaller at equal quality, and WAV is uncompressed for audio editors.

192 kbps (High) sounds transparent for most music and is the default. 128 kbps is plenty for speech such as lectures and voice notes. 320 kbps only helps if the source audio is already high quality; it cannot add detail that isn't there.
Choose MP3 when the file must play everywhere, including older car stereos. M4A sounds the same as MP3 at a lower bitrate and plays on Apple devices, Android and modern browsers. Choose WAV only for editing, since it is about ten times larger.
Files up to 4 GB and 4 hours long on a computer, or 2 GB and 2 hours on a phone. The video is read in pieces rather than loaded into memory, so large recordings work; only the audio file being written has to fit in memory.
