Why WMA files need converting
Windows Media Player ripped CDs to WMA by default for years, and many old Windows voice recorders and downloads used it too. iPhones, Macs, most Android players, car stereos and music apps don't play WMA.
Converting a music collection to MP3 makes it play on current devices. Files bought from old online stores may carry DRM (Windows Media rights management), and protected files can't be converted by any browser tool.
What happens to your WMA
FFmpeg in WebAssembly decodes WMA (versions 1 and 2), WMA Pro and WMA Lossless, and encodes the audio with the LAME MP3 encoder. Title and artist tags are copied where possible.
WMA to MP3 is a lossy re-encode for standard WMA, so pick a bitrate at least as high as the original, usually 192 kbps.

Is my file uploaded anywhere?
No. The conversion runs in your browser with a WebAssembly build of FFmpeg. Your file is read from your device and the result is saved back to it; nothing is sent to our servers.
Why won't my WMA file convert?
It is probably DRM-protected, which was common for music bought from older Windows stores. Protected files can't be converted.
Why can't my iPhone play WMA?
Apple never added support for Windows Media Audio. MP3 or M4A play on every Apple device.
Which bitrate should I pick?
192 kbps (High) sounds transparent for most music and is the default. 128 kbps is plenty for speech such as lectures and voice notes. 320 kbps only helps if the source audio is already high quality; it cannot add detail that isn't there.
Can I convert a whole folder of WMA files?
One file at a time. Process another file keeps your settings between conversions.
How large a file can I convert?
Files up to 4 GB and 4 hours long on a computer, or 2 GB and 2 hours on a phone. The video is read in pieces rather than loaded into memory, so large recordings work; only the audio file being written has to fit in memory.
