AVI was the standard video format of the 2000s. Digital cameras and camcorders of that era, old webcams, screen recorders and many older downloads saved AVI. Family events, school performances and old interviews often live in AVI files that modern phones won't play.

FFmpeg in WebAssembly reads the AVI's audio, which is usually uncompressed PCM, MP3 or ADPCM in old camera files, and encodes it as MP3. Video codecs such as DivX, Xvid or Motion JPEG are ignored, so they don't need to be supported.

AVI often uses old codecs such as DivX, Xvid or Motion JPEG that phones don't include. Converting the audio to MP3 avoids the problem for the sound.

192 kbps (High) sounds transparent for most music and is the default. 128 kbps is plenty for speech such as lectures and voice notes. 320 kbps only helps if the source audio is already high quality; it cannot add detail that isn't there.
Files up to 4 GB and 4 hours long on a computer, or 2 GB and 2 hours on a phone. The video is read in pieces rather than loaded into memory, so large recordings work; only the audio file being written has to fit in memory.
