Remove Background Music from Audio (Keep the Voice)

Take the music out from under a recording and keep the voice: podcasts, voice notes, interviews and lectures. AI does it in your browser, and nothing is uploaded.

Your file never leaves your device. How?

Your media is processed in your browser and is not uploaded to our servers for conversion. Page assets (including the converter engine) still load over the network.

Select or drop an audio file

MP3, M4A, WAV, OGG, FLAC or a voice note. The music is removed on your device: nothing is uploaded.

How to remove the music from a recording

1

Choose the recording

Drop an MP3, M4A, WAV, OGG or FLAC file (or a voice note) from your device.

2

Let the model download once

The first time, about 43 MB downloads and is saved in your browser for next time.

3

Remove the music

Tap Remove the music. The AI keeps the voice and takes away the music behind it.

4

Download the voice

Play it in the page, then download the voice as an MP3. The music on its own is there too.

Recordings with music underneath

A podcast episode with a music bed you no longer have the rights to, an interview recorded with a radio on, a lecture with music in the hall, a voice note sent from a party: the voice is what matters, and the music gets in the way of editing, transcribing or re-publishing it.

This takes out the music and keeps the speech. For songs (to get the instrumental or the vocals), use the Vocal Remover instead.

How it works

An MDX-Net model (from the open-source Ultimate Vocal Remover project) runs in your browser and splits the recording into the voice and everything else, a few seconds at a time. Long recordings are done in parts, crossfaded, so a phone doesn't run out of memory.

Speech over music separates cleanly; a voice buried in very loud music can keep a little of it, and sound effects go with the music.

Frequently asked questions

Is my video uploaded?

No. Only the AI model is downloaded, once, from this site. The voice is separated from the music in your browser and the new video is made on your device.

Which audio files work?

MP3, M4A, WAV, OGG, Opus, FLAC and most voice notes, up to 15 minutes on a computer or 6 minutes on a phone.

Can I lower the music instead of removing it?

Yes, with the Music Mixer (Pro): set the music's level, or let it dip whenever someone speaks. You can try it on your recording for free, and your first mix is free.

Will it remove background noise too?

Steady background sound mostly goes with the music, but hiss or hum close to the voice can remain. The Noise Remover cleans that up afterwards.

Does it work on songs?

It keeps the singing as the voice, so you'd get the vocals. For karaoke or an instrumental, use the Vocal Remover.
