How to Translate a Video Into English, Hindi or Any Language
To translate a video, you turn what's said into text, translate every line, and put the lines back on the video at the moment they're spoken. An online video translator does all three for you in a few minutes: pick the video, choose the language, and download the video with translated subtitles or the subtitle file. Here's how, step by step.
The quick answer
Open a video translator such as ClipUtils' free Video Translator, choose your video, set "Subtitles in" to the language you want, and press Generate. The speech is written out, each line is translated and kept in time with the voice, and you can download the video with the translation drawn in, or an SRT file for YouTube or a video player.
You don't need to know the video's language: it's detected by itself, from 99 spoken languages. You also don't need to upload the whole video: only the audio is sent to be transcribed, and only the text to be translated.
Step by step: translate a video with subtitles
1. Choose the video from your phone or computer. MP4, MOV and WebM all work, and so do recordings from WhatsApp, Instagram or your phone's camera.
2. Under "Subtitles in", pick the language you want: English, Hindi, Hinglish, Spanish, Portuguese, French, German, Italian, Indonesian, Turkish and more.
3. Press Generate. The speech is written down first, then translated line by line. Each line keeps the timing of the words it came from, so the translation appears exactly when it's said.
4. Read the translated lines. Names, brand names and slang are where any translation slips most, and you can fix any line by typing over it.
5. Download. Either make the video with the subtitles drawn in, which shows everywhere including Instagram, WhatsApp Status and TikTok, or download an SRT file to upload to YouTube or open in VLC.
How to translate a video into English
Choose the video and set "Subtitles in" to English. Videos in Hindi, Spanish, Portuguese, Arabic, Korean, Japanese or any other language become English subtitles timed to the speech.
If the speech has two languages mixed together, as many Hindi or Spanish videos do, set the spoken language yourself before you press Generate: the transcript is more accurate when it knows what to listen for.
How to translate a video into Hindi
Set "Subtitles in" to Hindi to get subtitles in Devanagari (हिंदी), or to Hinglish for Hindi written in English letters, the way many creators caption their videos.
This works from English and from any other language: a Spanish, Arabic or Korean video can be translated into Hindi just like an English one. When you make the video, pick a caption font that shows Devanagari properly, such as Poppins or Baloo.
Subtitles or a voice-over: which do you need?
Subtitles keep the original voice and add the translation as text. They are the right choice for tutorials, lectures, interviews and social media, where most people watch with the sound off anyway.
A voice-over replaces the speech with a voice in the new language. AI dubbing does this: it translates the speech and speaks it in a natural AI voice, in time with the original and over the video's own background music. Use it when your audience would rather listen than read, for example for longer explainers or videos for children.
Tips for an accurate translation
Start with clear audio. Background music and noise lower the accuracy of any speech recognition; if your video is noisy, clean it up first with a noise remover.
Set the spoken language when it's unusual or mixed. Automatic detection is reliable for one clear language, but a mix of languages is easier when you say which one is spoken.
Check names and numbers. They are the words translations get wrong most often, and fixing a line takes a second.
Keep the original subtitles too. Some translators can put both languages on screen, the original line small under the translation, which helps viewers learning a language.
Is it free?
With ClipUtils, the first 8 minutes of any video are translated free, with no sign-up and no watermark. Longer videos, subtitles in two languages at once, or several languages in one go are part of Pro.
