How to Add Subtitles to Instagram Reels (Free, No App Needed)

Instagram reports that 40% of Reels are watched without sound. Without captions, your spoken content is invisible to nearly half your audience.

Subtitles also improve engagement metrics that Instagram's algorithm uses to distribute content: watch time, shares, and saves all increase when viewers can read along. Accessible content gets pushed to more people.

Instagram offers auto-generated captions as a sticker in the Reels editor. These are convenient but limited — you get minimal font options, the styling looks generic, and viewers can turn them off.

Burned-in subtitles are embedded permanently in the video file. They show up on every platform you share the video to (not just Instagram), they match your brand style, and they can't be dismissed by the viewer.

The video stays on your device: in Accurate mode (the default) only the audio is sent to be transcribed, then deleted 3. Click 'Generate Subtitles' to auto-transcribe with Whisper AI 4. Review the lines and tap any word the AI got wrong to fix it 5. Pick a caption style: Highlight, Box, One word, Word by word, Clean, Pill or Underline. The preview plays on your own video. Open 'Customize: font, size, position' to change the font, size and position 6. Click 'Create video with captions' 7. Click 'Download video with captions' and upload it to Instagram

The video is free and has no watermark. If you'd rather have plain subtitles, pick Classic, choose the font, color and size, and click 'Create video with subtitles'.

Style: Highlight or One word — big words, with the spoken one lit up, are easy to follow on a small screen. Font: A heavy sans-serif. In the animated styles that's Poppins (the default), Montserrat or Anton; in Classic, Impact or Arial in Bold. Color: White text with a bright highlight such as yellow or green. Avoid light colors on light video backgrounds. Size: M (the default) or bigger — Reels are viewed on phones where small text disappears. Position: Lower — it sits just above the Reels UI elements (username, caption, audio info). Middle is safe too. In Classic, choose Mid: Low sits at the very bottom, under those elements.

Show 2–4 words at a time (the 'Words at a time' setting under Customize). Instagram Reels are fast-paced — viewers need to read instantly without pausing.

Reels: Permanent burned-in captions work best. Reels are discoverable by non-followers, so subtitles maximize reach.

Stories: Instagram's caption sticker is usually sufficient for Stories since they're ephemeral and seen mainly by followers.

Feed video posts: Burned-in subtitles are ideal here too, especially for longer talking-head content. Feed videos autoplay on mute in the timeline.
