How to Add Subtitles to YouTube Shorts (Free Guide)

YouTube Shorts are consumed in the same scroll-and-swipe pattern as TikTok and Reels. Most viewers are on their phone, often in public, and frequently have sound off.

YouTube's algorithm prioritizes watch time and engagement. Shorts with captions keep viewers watching longer because they can follow the content regardless of their sound setting. This directly impacts how many people YouTube shows your Short to.

YouTube automatically generates captions for Shorts, but they have significant limitations:

- Auto-captions are off by default — viewers have to manually enable them - Accuracy varies widely, especially with accents, music, or fast speech - You can't control the font, size, color, or position - They're not visible in the Shorts feed scroll preview

Burned-in subtitles are visible immediately, look exactly how you designed them, and work even when the Short is shared outside YouTube (WhatsApp, Twitter, etc.).

1. Record your Short (vertical 9:16 video; YouTube takes Shorts up to 3 minutes) 2. Open cliputils.com/tools/auto-captions-for-reels 3. Avoid placing text in the top 15% (title bar) or bottom 20% (buttons and description) of the frame. In the animated styles, Middle and Lower stay clear of both; in Classic, choose Mid, because Low sits at the very bottom.

Show 2-4 words at a time ('Words at a time' under Customize). YouTube Shorts are fast-paced and vertical — long lines either get too small or overflow the screen.

Match subtitle timing to your natural speech cadence. The AI handles this automatically, but play the preview to check it if you have quick cuts.

Use consistent styling across all your Shorts. This builds your channel's visual identity and makes your content instantly recognizable in the feed.

Consider using a slightly larger font size than you think you need. Shorts are always viewed on phones, and what looks readable on your computer monitor may be tiny on a phone screen.
