How to Add Subtitles to a TikTok Video (Free, No Watermark)

Most TikTok users scroll with sound off — especially in public, at work, or in bed. If your video relies on spoken words without captions, you're losing most of your audience in the first second.

TikTok's algorithm also favors videos with higher watch time and engagement. Captions keep viewers watching longer because they can follow along regardless of their environment. Accessibility isn't just the right thing to do — it directly boosts your reach.

TikTok has an auto-caption feature built into the app. After recording or uploading your video, tap 'Captions' in the editing screen. TikTok will auto-generate text from your audio.

The downsides: TikTok's auto-captions are often inaccurate, especially with accents or background music. You get limited font and style options. And the captions are 'soft' — viewers can turn them off, which means they might never see them.

For permanent, stylized captions that every viewer sees, burn subtitles directly into your video before uploading to TikTok.

Style: Highlight or One word — big words, with the spoken one lit up, are easy to follow with the sound off. Font: A heavy one such as Poppins (the default), Montserrat or Anton. In Classic, Impact or Arial in Bold — thin text gets lost on busy video backgrounds. Color: White text with a dark outline (most styles have one) reads on any background. Yellow or green is a popular highlight. Size: M (the default) or L — small text is unreadable on phone screens. Position: Lower or Middle — Lower sits just above the TikTok username and caption at the bottom, well below the FYP/Following tabs at the top. In Classic, choose Mid: Low sits at the very bottom, under the username.

Keep captions short — 2 to 4 words at a time work best on vertical video (set it with 'Words at a time' under Customize). Long sentences get cut off or become too small to read.

Match the caption timing to your speech rhythm. The AI does this automatically, but play the preview to check it if your video has fast cuts.

Use a consistent caption style across all your videos. This builds brand recognition — viewers start associating your style, font and color choices with your content.
