Discord's 10 MB limit

Without Nitro, Discord rejects files over 10 MB. Gameplay clips, screen recordings and phone videos are usually much bigger: a minute of 1080p phone video is often 60 MB or more.

How good the result looks depends on length. A 20-second clip gets about 4 Mbps and can stay at 1080p. A one-minute clip gets about 1.3 Mbps and is scaled to 720p. At three minutes it drops to 360p and looks soft, so trimming to the moment that matters gives a much better result than squeezing a long video.

How the 10 MB target is reached

The tool divides 10 MB, minus 4% for file overhead, by the clip's duration to get a total bitrate, gives the audio 64 or 96 kbps, and encodes the video with H.264 at the remainder.

Encoders don't land exactly on target, so the result is measured. If it's over 10 MB, the clip is encoded again at a proportionally lower bitrate, up to three attempts in total.

Is my file uploaded?

No. Processing runs in your browser with a WebAssembly build of FFmpeg. Your file is read from your device and the result is saved back to it.

What is Discord's file size limit?

10 MB per file without Nitro. Nitro raises it to 500 MB and Nitro Basic to 50 MB.

How long a video can fit in 10 MB?

Clips up to about a minute look good. Up to around three minutes still fits but at 360p. Longer videos get very blurry, and past about eight minutes the tool asks you to trim first.

How does it hit the exact size?

It divides the target size by the video's length to get a bitrate, reserves room for audio and file overhead, and encodes at that bitrate. If the result still comes out over the limit, it automatically tries again at a lower bitrate, up to three attempts.

How large or long a video can I compress?

Compression re-encodes every frame in your browser, so it works for videos up to 120 MB and 10 minutes on a computer, or 60 MB and 5 minutes on a phone. Trim longer videos first.

Should I remove the audio?

For clips where sound doesn't matter, yes: the audio's share of the 10 MB goes to the picture instead.
